What inoculations do I need?

Apart from the standard ones that you should have anyway (tetanus, typhoid, polio and diphtheria) you will need hepatitis A and malarial prophylactics in most areas - check with your GP or travel clinic.

What sort of travel insurance should I take out?

Standard travel insurance is generally Ok, but ensure you are sufficiently covered to be evacuated from your destination if it becomes necessary due to injury or illness. Safari is often classed as a special risk and should be mentioned when purchasing your cover.

What is a normal day on Safari?

Generally you will get up at dawn and have a small breakfast. You will then be taken on an escorted drive or walk where a guide or ranger will show you the features of the area and you will hopefully discover some wildlife returning to camp after a rest stop some time in the morning. You will be fed far too much for lunch and spend the next few hours sleeping or otherwise relaxing in camp. As the heat of the day lessens you will have tea and then go out for an afternoon drive or walk. If you are driving you may well have sun-downers at sunset and stay out later with a spotter to view the nocturnal wildlife. You will not normally stay out after dark if you are walking. Then it will be time for another huge dinner and time to chat over your day with other guests.

What should I take with me?

Light coloured but neutral cotton clothing is a must for the daytime but a warm jacket is often required after dark, even in camp where most of the facilities will be open to the elements. Insect repellent is essential at night time. A good torch is useful.

What sort of camera should I take?

The best you can afford, or borrow. A 300mm lens should be adequate for most viewing. A video camera with night vision is a boon for those keen on making their own documentaries.

What safety precautions should I take?

At a lodge your rangers and guides will brief you on their own particular requirements when you arrive but it will basically boil down to "stay in the vehicle unless given permission to get out" and "never walk alone after dark around camp" and "never leave camp without a ranger".

What if I am driving myself from place to place?

Make sure that you plan your route beforehand and are sure that someone at your destination is expecting you to arrive at a certain time. If you become stranded for whatever reason, stay with your vehicle.
