Remote Africa

In the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia there are a number of lodges. One of these is Tafika, run by John and Carol Coppinger. Opened in 1995 the company Remote Africa now has three camps. Tafika, a luxury five cabin camp with a large staff to look after your every need; Mwaleshi, a smaller camp in the North Luangwa Park designed for those more keen on walking through the bush for their safari and finally the new bush camp, Chikoko, again for the more energetic. John owns a microlight aircraft and the keen can take a ride for an aerial view of the park.

The food provided is excellent and the lodge has a well stocked market garden providing plenty of fresh vegetables. There is no choice of menu but they will cater for specific dietary requirements when these are advised in advance. In addition the camp welcomes children, not a common commodity in these parts. The five cabins are of a permanent log construction with their own showers and toilets. There is a continuous twelve volt supply for lighting to the cabins and Rhodesian boilers provide continuous hot water for washing and showering. Purified water is provided for drinking and, of course there is a bar. The staff are friendly and experienced and will assist guests with their requirements. They are served by satellite phone for emergencies.

In addition to the two daily trips out into the Nsefu region of the park a visit to the local village can be organised for those interested in the local culture. Indeed the lodge provides considerable support for the local village and school.

As well as running the lodge John and other members of staff are actively involved in conservation projects and have recently conducted an expedition along the Luangwa river. An extract of their expedition report is available on this site.

Tafika is an example, typical of most lodges in Southern Africa. If you would be interested in more information please visit their website or contact one of the following agents.
